Audio clips:
A reminder to all users: While a sound file is downloading, on most browsers you can still read and jump around to other parts of the website - no need to just sit around and wait!

Periodocially, check in with the window that contained the sound button to see if the sound is ready to play. Most browsers also offer the option of saving the sound to your hard disk for replay at a later time without having to download again.

All recent sound clips are in mp3 format. Sound clips posted before 2005 are only in WAV format. The reason we chose an older Windows-native sound format was that these files were easily played on computers of any platform. They will likely remain accessible for more years to come.

Background music:
The background pieces are in standard MIDI format, so most home computers should now be able to realize the performances. However, if you are using an older version of Internet Explorer as your browser, a sound controller may not show up at the bottom of the pages. The music should still play once, and then stop. We couldn't figure out how to get this feature to work as successfully on Internet Explorer as it does on Netscape Navigator and other browsers. If anyone can help with this programming information, it would be appreciated!

Video clips:
Most video clips are in QuickTime format. You do not need a Macintosh to view them. Although developed by Apple for its Macintosh computers, QuickTime is a leading cross-platform vehicle for multimedia. Most modern browsers used on Windows machines have either a QuickTime "helper" or a QuickTime plugin that will allow you to view these movies.

If you select a video to watch, and nothing at all shows up on your screen, either

you need to obtain an appropriate plugin for your browser: Apple's QuickTime Plugin or any other that supports QuickTime movies or mpeg 4 movies files; such a plugin would allow these movies to be seen on a Mac or a Windows machine.

OR

you already have a QuickTime plugin installed in your Plugins folder (directory) but it has not yet been enabled in your browser. You can do so by going to your browser's Preferences area. Please note that all QuickTime movie files posted on this site will end in .mov

Most browsers released in the past few years, such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, have come with QuickTime plugin support.

Similar to sound files: While a video file is downloading, you can still read and jump around to other parts of the website - no need to just sit around and wait! While the QuickTime movie is downloading, click in any of the windows behind the one that will contain the movie. When the download is complete and you are ready to view the movie, click again anywhere in the "movie window".

Although you may start to watch the movie while it is downloading, it will run much smoother if you wait until the download is complete.

To begin playing the movie, click on the right-arrow in the controller bar below the picture. If no controller bar shows up beneath the movie window, you can play the movie by double-clicking inside the movie window.

Your browser probably allows you to SAVE the movie on your hard drive for future viewing. Try clicking inside the movie window and holding the mouse button down until a pop-up menu appears.

When finished viewing and/or saving the video, it is recommended to close the movie window.
